Sustainability & Re-Location of Dicksonia Antarctica

Sustainability-Dicksonia-antartica.jpg

Fernmania is committed to the long-term sustainability of Dicksonia antarctica, the iconic Tasmanian tree fern. Our approach combines responsible relocation, on-site cultivation and careful reuse of natural resources to ensure these remarkable plants continue to be available for future landscapes and gardens.

Water Management - Water is one of the most important elements in growing healthy tree ferns. Fernmania maintains several dams on the property which capture and store rainwater for use throughout the nursery.

This stored water is used to irrigate the growing areas and maintain the humid conditions that Dicksonia antarctica prefers. By relying on captured rainwater rather than external supply, Fernmania is able to operate a more sustainable and self-sufficient nursery environment.

Re-Using Natural Materials - Very little goes to waste at Fernmania.

Cuttings, offcuts and organic material from the nursery are reused wherever possible. Sections of tree fern trunks, fronds and other natural materials are repurposed within the growing areas or returned to the landscape where they naturally break down and support the soil.

Even the base sections of Dicksonia antarctica can be reused or propagated, allowing new plants to develop and ensuring that as much of each plant as possible continues its life cycle.

Growing and Propagating Tree Ferns - Fernmania actively grows Dicksonia antarctica on site. Tree ferns are slow-growing plants that require patience and long-term care, but cultivation plays an important role in reducing reliance on wild collection.

Through propagation and careful nursery management, Fernmania is helping maintain a sustainable supply of these unique plants for gardens and landscape projects.

Re-Location of Tree Ferns - Dicksonia antarctica is one of the few large plants that can be successfully relocated. Fernmania specialises in carefully moving mature specimens from areas where they would otherwise be lost due to land clearing, development or infrastructure projects.

By relocating these plants, mature tree ferns can continue growing for many decades in new gardens, parks and landscapes rather than being destroyed.

A Sustainable Future for Tree Ferns

Through a combination of cultivation, relocation, water conservation and reuse of natural materials, Fernmania works to ensure that Dicksonia antarctica continues to thrive both in Tasmania and in landscapes around the world.

These iconic ferns are now used in botanic gardens, private estates, commercial landscapes and natural garden designs internationally, bringing a piece of Tasmania’s unique environment to projects worldwide.
